Shrink Your Voice

As I approach the next decade of birthdays, I’ve noticed how much more outspoken I’ve become. I used to be a shy young woman who was afraid to speak her mind, at the risk of causing others any discomfort. Instead, I’d bring that discomfort onto myself by not speaking my truth.

I think as women we were groomed at a young age to be “good little girls.” This may have looked different for many of us, but for me it included acting polite and reserved, not talking back or raise my voice, keep a clean outfit and look well put together. Exterior presentation was very important. Making a docile impression was also important.

Now I get to question all of it! Starting with, is that the kind of behavior I want my daughter to go through? Do I want her to feel like she needs to dim her light in order to let others’ light shine brighter?! Absolutely not!

How many of us mamis have felt like they needed to shrink their voice for someone else’s benefit? Has that benefited YOU in any way?

As moms we wear many different crowns. Being an independent, strong, loving individual are my top three. The ones I want my daughter to see me wear. Most importantly, I want her to not be afraid to choose her own one day.

Have you had times in your life where you felt like you had to shrink your voice?
